Every Sunday evening at sunset, anyone who owns (any type) of drum gathers on the beach. Whether they are middle class, working class, homeless, Black, White, Mexican, Asian, old, young, male or female; if they own a drum or any sort of musical instrument such as a tambourine or cowbell, they come together (that is a lot of people). They form a large circle and begin to drum to their own beat. While they may be drumming as individuals, together everyone's beats begin to synchronize into a song. And the sound coming from the large number of drums is so loud you feel like you're at a concert or a fireworks show, it almost feels like they're drumming on your chest.

While the drummers create the music, the middle of the circle is available for anyone who would like to dance to the beat of the drums. People can dance alone, with a friend or with a stranger. The same goes for the dancers, it doesn't matter what social status you 'rank' in, everyone is allowed to danced.
With the sunset, the synchronization of the beats of the drums and the energy of the dancers, seeing people from all different social status', ethnicity, and age interact together in such a harmonious way is truly beautiful. Even though most of the people engaging in this drum/dance/love fest (there are people literally getting down on the grass) are high on drugs, as a sober observer it it is still absolutely beautiful; seeing the peace between everyone who is just enjoying the moment is so refreshing.
A blog definitely doesn't justify the feelings and emotions felt when experiencing the Sunday Sunset Ritual at Venice Beach, so I definitely recommend experiencing it first hand.
Just a suggestion: Bring a drum or musical instrument to join along with a candle to light when the sun finally sets. Don't bring a purse or any personal items with you. When you hear the loud beating drums and see the harmony among everyone, you WILL want to join in on the dancing, I promise.
